| Full Day Tour Xanthos,
Saklikent, Patara, Tlos, Kaputas Beach | |
Xanthos-Our
tour leaves from Kas in the morning and stops at the ancient city of Xanthos,
45 km from Kas. An easy walk from the entrance leads you to the impressive Roman
theater, agora, and pillar Lycian tombs dating back 2000 years. Don't miss the
fabulous collection of mosaics at the Byzantine church site near the parking lot.
Saklikent-You will escape the grueling
heat of the summer in Saklikent Canyon. The 150 meter catwalk follows the wide,
freezing cool river which takes you to the gorge's entrance. A shady, cool lunch
is served on platforms with river water rushing under you. Only the brave, wearing
good hiking shoes, can cross the rushing river to the canyon narrows. Easy hiking
is followed by a more difficult 18 km trek reserved for the professional mountaineers.
Tlos-an optional part of our tour. One
of the longest inhabited cities of the Lycians. Built over the Lycian fortress,
an Ottoman castle remained inhabited until the 19th century. The remains of a
prosperous Roman city lie below the castle.
Patara-
Birthplace of St. Nicolas, Patara's ruins are scattered across fields with a partially
sand-covered theater. Once the most important ports on the Lycian coast, is now
an 18 km white, sandy beach.
Kaputas Beach-Lovely
place to see a sunset. If you don't mind the trek down the long stairway, this
beach is a great place for a evening swim before returning to Kas.

Day Tour To Üçagız, Simena, Kekova Island, St Nicholas Church, Myra |
|
Kekova
(Ucagiz and Kalekoy)- An experienced tour guide leads this tour leaving
Kas at 10:00 am on a chauffeur driven, air-conditioned minibus. From Kas you travel
38 kilometers to the Kekova region, one of the most beautiful spots on the Mediterranean.
The first stop is a little seaside village, Ucagiz, once an ancient port. From
there you continue to the tiny village of Kalekoy (Castle Village), ancient Lycian
city of Simena, by boat. Have lunch under the castle and wear good shoes for the
slightly daring scramble over a steep rock face leading to the summit. The panoramic
view is unforgettable, not to mention Lycian tombs and Byzantine sarcophagi, an
easy hike from the boat.
Kekova Island-Next
we cruise past the sunken ruins of Kekova Island.
Destroyed by a series of
earthquakes at the turn of the first millennium, an ancient city's remains are
visible by boat. In this archeologically protected area, no swimming is permitted
but we will be stopping at the Kekova Blue Cave and lovely coves for excellent
swimming and snorkeling.
Myra-We
return to the bus in Demre for a short ride to one of the earliest and most important
cities in the Lycian Federation, Myra. This impressive archeological site dates
back to the 5th Century B.C. The free standing theater was converted for gladiator
combat in the 2nd century A.D. Layers of magnificent Lycian house tombs rise up
behind the theater.
St. Nicholas Church-Site
of the church of St. Nicholas, bishop of Myra in the 4th Century A.D. A basilica
was built over his tomb in the 6th Century, destroyed by Arabs, was repaired by
Emperor Justine and extended by Constantine IX in 1043 and by the Russians in
the 19th Century. In 1087, Nicolas's body was stolen by Italian traders and taken
to the Basilica of Nicola in Bari, Italy.
