Canakkale At A Glance

Situated on the straits of the Dardanelles, Çanakkale is home to many sites of historical import and influence. Not least of all being the Gallipoli Peninsula, where one of history's most bloody battles took place during WW1. The area now has numerous sites dedicated to both the ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand) and Turkish soldiers who gave their lives here.

The city of Çanakkale lies at the entrance to the strait which joins the Aegean and Marmara seas. Ferries run frequently between the Asian and European sides of the strait. Many yachts travelling through the Dardanelles also stop at Çanakkale Harbour to take full advantage of the sites.

There are many hotels, restaurants and cafes in the area which offer wonderful views of the harbour traffic as well as the Kilitbahir Fortress and Cimenlik Fortress, now the Army and Navy Museum.

Most accommodation here is of similar quality, though there are one or two higher class hotels. During summer it is a very popular destination, and on ANZAC Day, the 25th of April, the area is descended upon by thousands of Australian and New Zealand travellers for the annual dawn memorial service.
