Historically,
a rather important Turkish city, Assos is particularly famous in the teachings
of Antiquity. Plato's most famous student, Aristotle, was sent here and while
here discovered a school of philosophy, often referred to as the 'school of logic
and reasoning', in the seventh century. The
Temple of Athena stands atop the acropolis, at 238m above sea level. The Temple
is currently being restored to its former glory. İt is the perfect place to view
all of the surrounding area to Assos, and particularly beautiful first thing in
the morning as dawn rises over the acropolis, and also in the evenings at sunset,
and then as the moonlight dances through the temple ruins. Assos
has also gained a reputation as being the centre of Turkey's art community, with
its wonderfully Bohemian atmosphere. Assos
itself consists of two parts, the Upper Village, and the Harbour Area. The Upper
Village is still a true Turkish Village, it has managed to avoid being affected
by outside influences. There are some very nice pensions and hotels located here,
in original and converted houses and buildings. The
Harbour area was not a residential area, but did have many depots and inns, some
of which have now been converted to house special class and star rated hotels.
İt is a generally quiet and peaceful area, though there are three bars which feature
live music located in the Harbour area. Overall,
Assos has a very unique and charming atmosphere, and the views from the acropolis
alone are worth making a trip for.
