Antalya
At A Glance
Antalya,
often referred to as the 'Turkish Riviera', is where sea, sun, history and nature
all meet to create a most wonderful beauty. Founded around 150 BC by the Pergamum
King Attalus, it was considered to be a 'heaven on earth' and subsequently many
nations watched its progress with great interest, and in 133 BC, it was taken
over by Rome.
During
the Byzantine time it was an archdiocese, and after its capture by the Seljuk,
it continued to be an important commercial and military port.
There
is very little of the old settlements remaining standing today, but there are
some structures still standing, such as Hadrian's Gate, a monumental arch built
when the great Emperor Hadrian visited the city in 130 AD. All visitors to the
area though, should see the Antalya Museum, which holds some fantastic ethnographic
exhibits, and also some rare finds from nearby places such as Perge.
Accommodation
ranges from pensions to top quality special class hotels, many of which are in
converted Turkish houses and mansions. Many of these are located within the streets
of Kaleiçi, the Ottoman old town. There are also quite a few 5 star hotels available,
just a few minutes from the centre of Antalya, mostly on the water.
Kaleiçi
is a great area to stay in, there are plenty of restaurants and bars, many of
them overlooking the harbour, one of the most beautiful along the Mediterranean.
There is also a great range of shopping to be found here. |
